On the menu from the farmers: John’s vegetarian chili, Sonya’s amazing shahi paneer (that’s an Indian tomato-based curry), and probably some of John’s bread. Rachael will be cooking, too, but hasn’t settled on anything just yet! Come on over, and come hungry!
I wrote at some length a few weeks ago about the recent nationwide egg recall and how one of the “farms” involved is run by none other than the notorious Turner-based DeCoster family. Joe Fassler wrote an excellent (and long!) article for The Atlantic about Jack DeCoster’s decades of shenanigans as an egg producer. It’s got a great title, too: Timeline of Shame: Decades of DeCoster Egg Factory Violations. Joe Fassler actually called me up a couple weeks ago for a phone interview. He wanted the perspective of a small egg producer about all of this, and we had a nice chat. I didn’t make it into the article, partly, I think, because Mr. Fassler thought we were located closer to Turner and might have had some direct dealings or interactions with DeCoster. Luckily not…
Speaking of laying hens, many thanks to the handful of folks who have taken some older hens off our hands in recent days. It’s not too late if you’d still like to have some laying hens for yourself; we still have seventeen of our older birds left and free for the taking.
As fall rapidly comes on, it’s time once again to put out the call for leaves. We use leaves and our own grass clippings to mulch many crops on the farm including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, strawberries, and garlic just to name a few. We got such a great response from neighbors and CSAers last fall that we managed to mulch everything we needed to and had some left over. So, once again: once those leaves start falling, we’d love to have them! If you can bring them to us here at the farm, bagged or unbagged, that would be great. We are also willing to come fetch them if need be.
I forgot to mention last week that we harvested all our winter squash, including butternut, acorn, delicotta, sweet dumpling, and more. As with so many other things this season, the squash results look great: the squash looks good and there’s plenty of it. We’ve got them laid out on stacked greenhouse tables in the barn to cure for a week or two before we start sending them home with our CSA members.
Your CSA share this week includes the following:
2 lbs of potatoes (Carola or All-Blue or a combination)
1 cabbage (red or green savoy)
1 lb of onions (sweet white, yellow, or red)
Today’s complicated choice: 1 pint of husk cherries -OR- a choice between various veggies, pears, or raspberries
1 bunch of beets
1 bunch of Red Russian kale -OR- 1 bunch of swiss chard
1 bulb of garlic
Mixed beefsteak and heirloom tomatoes (up to 7 lbs)
1 bunch of basil
Bread shareholders received a loaf of Cornmeal Wheat bread this week. The goodies for sale at pick-up this week include eggs, flowers, pizza dough, pancake mix, carrot walnut muffins, spicy oatmeal cookies, zucchini relish, and more! Yum!
