On to better things… Can it really be the 5th pick-up?! Our goal for the CSA is a 20-week season which means we’re already a quarter through! Time flies when you’re farming and enjoying the bounty! This week’s share includes the following:
.6 lb bag of salad mix
1 head of lettuce (red leaf, red crisp, or Black-seeded Simpson)
1 bunch of Red Russian kale -OR- 1 bunch of Swiss chard
1 bunch radishes
1 bunch of parsley
1 pint of sugar snap peas
1 pint of cherry tomatoes (Portland only)
As with the strawberries back in June, the greenhouse Sungold and Supersweet 100 cherry tomatoes are just getting started. This week, our CSAers who pick-up at the Wednesday farmers’ market in Portland get the first taste. Allen Ave. and Bridgton folks may get them this week, too. Next week, we hope to have enough for absolutely everybody!
Some people last year were confused about this, so for the record: with sugar snap peas, you eat the whole thing, pod and all. Try them in a stir fry or raw in a salad. They are one of my favorite “snack while you harvest” veggies! As always, check out our ever-expanding recipe index for ideas on how to prepare this week’s veggies!
And again, thanks for your patience and understanding as we muddle through a wet and challenging season. Your chard may be a bit chewed, the radish greens a bit yellow…we’re doing the best we can with what we’ve got to work with! Think SUN!!!
