Almost there…

Howdy, folks, from Summit Springs Farm Central on this sunny, muggy Friday afternoon.  It’s been a busy couple of weeks on the farm, and we’re really looking forward to kicking off the CSA next week!  We did our most extensive harvesting of the season so far this morning, collecting salad mix, head lettuce, broccoli raab, radishes, and spinach for tomorrow’s markets, and it was satisfying!  Good, too, to have some extra hands on hand to help.  Apprentice Christina has finished up her teaching gig down in Mass. and will be with us full time for the rest of the summer.  We’ve also had the pleasure of working with Alex Yaeger, our first WWOOFer of the season, this past week.  She comes to us from Minnesota by way of Brooklyn and will be here camping out and helping out for another week.  She got a crash course in organic farming this week as we did a little bit of everything:  planting, weeding, potato bug seek-and-destroying, tomato trellising, and today, harvesting.  We’re happy she’s here!

Alex, Andrew, and Christina battle the weeds in the pea beds.

Those piggies are doing well, too.  They are conspicuously larger now than they were when they arrived (a mere two weeks ago) and seem comfortable in their area.  The grand scheme was to move these pigs around some, but they may well stay put.  We attempted a move on Wednesday.  I won’t go into too much detail…let’s just say that it didn’t go very smoothly, and Toot and Puddle (and their house and fence) wound up right back where they started.  We’re considering our options, but as noted, they might just stay where they are for the duration.  Live and learn!

Farmer John will be the entertainment at this Saturday’s installment of the Bridgton Farmers’ Market, playing guitar and singing songs, some his own, some not.  Come on by from 8 AM until 1 PM right next to Reny’s on Depot St. in Bridgton.  (Buy some veggies, too!)  Also of note on Saturday, the annual Valhalla Fields Summer Arts Festival is happening right here in Poland.  Curated by Zakk and Emmy of Square Root fame, this long-running, all day, FREE festival features music, art, food, all-around good vibes, and entertainment for the whole family.  Please, check it out!
