Bam! Spring is here! Hope! Promise! Green! Growth! Renewal! And….wait….snow? Ice? Dammit! Well, it still looks and feels very much like winter in Maine outside, but today, as planned, we did get the first seeds of 2011 sown out in the greenhouse.
The first step was to get our new greenhouse woodstove fired up which I did after a few fits and starts. We’ve used a Modine propane furnace in the past (and still…it remains hooked up and functioning as a back-up/supplemental heat source) and hope that the woodstove will help us keep our costs down, not to mention less of a carbon footprint. Once the place was warmed up a little, Sonya settled in and spent most of the day sowing, sowing, sowing (with a little greenhouse reorganizing and setting up thrown in).
I, on the other hand, spent most of my work time outside the greenhouse, either hauling in wood or using the roof rake to get the snow and ice off of the greenhouse roof. So, as of right now, in trays out there we have: peppers and tomatoes (on heat mats and under plastic domes for extra warmth), basil, some flowers, and the beginning of the onion sowing. More to come tomorrow!
